The Masked Singer week five: Charlotte Crosby unmasked

MASKED SINGER SPOILERS BELOW.

Another contestant’s identity was revealed on The Masked Singer on Monday night, when - after a performance of the Meghan Trainor hit Lips Are Moving - the Space Fairy was unmasked as...

British reality star Charlotte Crosby. The reality TV veteran became famous by appearing on Geordie Shore, then UK Celebrity Big Brother, and is best known to Aussie audiences for her 2020 appearance on another Ten reality show: I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

Crosby was typically honest when the mask came off and she recounted her Masked Singer experience, saying it was “horrendous” under the mask, battling nerves and discomfort.

But it wasn’t all bad - she said she was buzzing at having performed in front of a Spice Girl, and impressed the judging panel so much they thought she was a professional singer.

The judging panel’s final guesses as to Space Fairy’s identity were UK soul singer Joss Stone, former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson, Aussie pop legend Marcia Hines and the Queen of hip-hop soul herself, Mary J Blige. Look, they were as good (or bad) as my guess - since week one, I’d been convinced Space Fairy was Australian Sweet About Me hitmaker Gabriella Cilmi.

This week’s episode also saw the addition of a new contestant, ‘Orca,’ who sang a rendition of the Gayle hit abcdefu. Her clues included that she “started young” and was “away from home.’ She said growing up was a “five-ring circus,” for “Absolutely Everybody.”

Now, I know what you’re thinking - Vanessa Amorosi? Problem is, the orca’s voice sounded nothing like Amorosi’s immediately distinctive vocals. Hmmm...

Elsewhere, the Grim Reaper – who we are absolutely convinced is Savage Garden legend Darren Hayes – sang the Britney classic Oops … I Did It Again, and it sounded so good we reckon Hayes should release it as his next single (if, in fact, he is the Grim Reaper... which he is).

At the start of the season, I took some educated guesses about who’s under each mask – picks include an internationally beloved Aussie pop icon, a US TV starlet and a top-selling Australian singer-songwriter.

This was the fifth celebrity to be revealed on The Masked Singer this season, with 90s Beverly Hills, 90210 heart throb Brian Austin Green unmasked in week one, and Ten’s veteran newsreader Sandra Sully revealed in week two.

Week three saw the season’s most moving reveal so far – Summer Warne, daughter of late cricketing legend Shane Warne, who explained that she’d done the show in tribute to her dad, who always encouraged her to pursue her passion for singing.

And last week, longtime The Block judge Shaynna Blaze showed off the pipes she’d honed in her earlier singing career, as she was revealed to be the contestant in the ‘Bluebottle’ costume.

Meanwhile, news.com.au went behind the scenes of The Masked Singer during filming in Sydney recently – all the way to Mel B’s dressing room, in fact.

We sat down with the Spice Girl to get the goss on her upcoming wedding, her recent move back to her hometown in Northern England, and what she and the other Spice Girls have planned for their next comeback – yes, she insists, all five of them.

The Masked Singer continues 7:30pm next Monday on Ten.
